Choosing Your Fireplace

Fireplaces

Step 1 - Select Mantel and Material. Once you have chosen the mantel you most desire, simply determine the finish you prefer by checking against the chart below.

Step 2 - Select Back Panel or Insert. There are a wide range of options available when choosing your fireplace back. You may choose a matching back panel and hearth set such as natural granite, marfil micro-marble or natural slate, or you may choose one of our beautifully crafted cast iron inserts allowing you the options of burning solid fuels such as wood or coal, using gas or even electric. When selecting your backpanel, please keep in mind the following important notes: • Your choice of back and hearth will determine your options of fire. We advise not to use micro-marble if burning solid fuel and some high efficient gas fires. Please check with your supplier for compatibility. • The use of solid fuel burning cast iron inserts is not recommended with the Tuscany veneered mantels. • All cast iron inserts are suitable for burning solid fuel, however polished and highlighted products may tarnish. Only burn small fires to start with in order to temper the cast iron.

Step 3 - Select Hearth And Fire. Your options of fire may be determined initially by your type of chimney. Please refer to the Chimney Type section for help finding out which type you have. You may then choose from a range of fires using gas, solid fuel or electricity.

Suites

Step 1 - Choose Your Suite and Material. Our suites range in sizes and most are available in several finishes. Click to take a look at the swatches below for a closer look at the materials on offer. The table shows which materials are available for each suite.

Step 2 - Select Hearth and Fire. Your options of fire may be determined initially by your type of chimney and also by your choice of suite. Please refer to the Chimney Type section for help finding out which type of chimney you have. You may then choose from a range of efficient gas or electric fires. More details of available fire options can be found on subsequent pages. The Pulse basket fire and chamber shown with the Valenza suite are compatible with the Torino and Roma suites also. As the micro marble models come with a one piece back panel, the opening will be larger than that shown with the limestone Valenza (no slips will be used so the opening will be the distance between the surround legs and the top of the hearth to the underside of the surround). The basket fire is a decorative gas fire.

Chimney Type

Once you have chosen your perfect fireplace its time to decide on what type of fire best suits your needs. The first thing to do before making your decision is establish your chimney type. Your type of chimney will determine which fires are suitable for your particular application. The table above will help you find the type of chimney you have and also gives details each of our fires, stoves, baskets and cast iron inserts, their respective fuel sources and chimney type compatibilities. The fires can be seen in more detail on the next page.

Choice of Fire

As well as chimney type, the efficiency of your fire may prove to be a significant factor when making this important decision so we feel it's important that we take the time to explain the differences in efficiency and what this means in terms of environmental and running costs. The Penman Collection has four fire options, each with a wide variety of frames, trims and frets. This section shows examples of what’s available to you.

Trims & Frets

Once you have chosen the type of fire you want its time to decide which frame or trim and fret combination you prefer.

A 'frame' refers to a one piece cast iron frame whereas a 'trim and fret' refers to a steel frame (available in a variety of finishes), which is chosen to accompany a fire fret. On this page there are a selection of 5 fret designs available in various finishes.

Simply find a fret you like, combine this with a matching trim, then check the table on the 'Fire Frames' page to determine which fires your chosen option is available with.

Fire Frames

Unlike the trims and frets on the previous page, the frames shown here are supplied as a single item. They do however come in a range of different finishes so there is sure to be something to suit your particular taste. The table above will help you to determine the most suitable fire and frame combination for you..

Note: spacer kits may be required to fit some frames to certain fires.

Other

All cast iron products are manufactured in ISO 9002 accredited manufacturing facilities. All the gas fires we supply are tested in accordance with CE requirements and are CE marked. Due to the manufacturing processes all measurements are approximate and may vary slightly so allow for a tolerance of plus or minus 12mm.

In order to achieve some of the colour options, we plate the products using a variety of manufacturing processes. When we state that a product is 'Antique Brass finish' or 'Chrome finish' there is no intention to mislead. The products are not brass or chrome respectively, they are simply plated to give that effect.

Micro-marble & Jura-stone Chiltern Finish products are not suitable for solid fuel applications.

The colours shown on this website and in our brochures are as accurate as possible, but if the colour you require is critical then please consult your retailer before basing all your decisions on the colours shown.

Your home may have a chimney type which will allow you to choose any of the fireplaces shown in the brochures. However, please consult the selection charts in the brochures and if you are not clear please consult your HETAS or GAS SAFE REGISTER (Board Gais in ROI) registered installer or your retailer.

Gas fires with a gas input of 6.9kW or less do not normally require air vents, but there are some circumstances where vents may be required. This is determined by your installer carrying out a spillage test during the commissioning process. If your chosen fire has a gas input greater than 6.9kW then a vent will be required. Please ask your retailer for further information.

There are occasions when designs, or products are altered or discontinued without prior notice (a reserved right), so if you are about to set your heart on a particular fireplace, please consult your retailer before making that final commitment.
